Whether you are young or old a visit with the bees at Chinook Honey Company is an experience you won’t
soon forget. Beekeepers Art and Cherie Andrews have opened their apiary to the public and also give
comprehensive talks about the amazing bees, their colony structure and the many wonderful products they
make. They also cover what a beekeeper does to keep their bees happy and healthy.
With the use of a live, working observation hive you can witness an amazing variety of honey bee behaviour
without any danger of being stung. Depending on the time of year you could watch the
queen laying eggs, the worker bees coming in with pollen or nectar, bees feeding the
young brood and perhaps even watch as a young bee emerges from their wax comb.
There is also a viewing window into the extracting facility and during harvest season
you may be able to catch the beekeepers in action as they extract the liquid gold.
Talks last approximately 45-60 minutes, and groups of up to 25 are easily handled. If
you have a larger group they can be divided and ccommodated in different areas.
All activities are indoors. There is also a gift store which sells a variety of honey
products including ice cream and mead.
Also, as of May 2008, Chinook Arch Meadery became Alberta’s first honey
winery! Mead - the ‘Nectar of the Gods’ is produced and sold at the Chinook
Honey Company site. Tastings are available during the regular store hours and
special tours of the apiary and winery (From Bee to Bottle) are available as well.
